Setting up your iPad to work with Reading Assistant
Please review our Technical Requirements article before setting up your device.
Ensure your Safari browser is updated.
To use Reading Assistant, you need an up-to-date web browser. For best results on iPad, Reading Assistant works only with Safari. Unless otherwise noted, Reading Assistant supports the latest two versions of all major browsers. If your browser displays a message that you need to update it, follow the prompts on the screen to update it. If the message is still displayed after you update the browser, try clearing your browser cache and cookies.
Install the Latest iOS Version
Reading Assistant performs best on an iPad with iOS 13 or higher. To install, ensure your device is plugged in and connected to the Internet. Then, follow these steps:
Go to Settings > General > Software Update
Tap Download and Install
Clear History or Enable Private browsing
Select the Settings icon on the home screen
Find Safari within the menu options along the left side of the screen
Select Clear History and Website Data > Clear
Always Allow the Microphone
We encourage you to enable the Safari browser to Always Allow microphone use to avoid access issues.
Scroll down to "Settings for Websites" and click Microphone
Choose Allow to allow the use of the microphone without permission every time you visit a website.
Disable Auto-Lock
To avoid the iPad "going to sleep," you may need to adjust the auto-lock settings. To adjust the auto-lock timing,
Go to Settings
Find Display & Brightness in the left navigation bar
Tap Auto-Lock
Choose Never
Ensure any additional tabs are closed in Safari
To clear open tabs in Safari automatically each night:
Go to Settings
Tap Safari
Tap Close Tabs
Select After One Day
To quickly close all open Safari tabs at once:
Place your finger on the tab switcher button and hold it there momentarily, performing a “long press.”
In the menu that pops up, select “Close All Tabs.” (There will be a number in the choice that lists the number of open tabs.)
When Safari asks you to confirm with another pop-up, tap “Close All Tabs” again.
Turn Off Siri
Go to Settings
Tap Safari
Tap Siri & Search
