Configure your Microsoft Edge browser settings always to allow the microphone.

This article provides tips for enabling your microphone using the Microsoft Edge web browser. You must permit Microsoft Edge to access the mic on student devices.

How do I permit Edge?

Edge should ask permission to access the microphone the first time you use Reading Assistant. You should only need to give Reading Assistant permission once. When you launch Reading Assistant through HMH Ed, she will prompt students to allow access. They will see the following message at the top left-hand corner of your browser window: Click Allow

How do I re-enable access to the microphone in Edge?

If you begin using Reading Assistant and get an alert about enabling your microphone at the beginning of a session, simply refresh your browser, and Edge will ask for permission again. If you are not prompted to allow access to a microphone, you may need to adjust your operating system settings to recognize it. See instructions in the next section.

Edge can access the microphone, but Reading Assistant still can’t hear my child. What do I do?

You may need to change your system preferences to recognize your device’s internal microphone. Here's how:

Windows

  1. Click Start and then Settings.

  2. On the left of the Settings window, click System and then Sound.

  3. Scroll down to the Input section and expand it, if necessary, to see all installed microphones. If it's not already selected, click the correct one.

  4. To adjust the volume, use the slider below the Input section.
