Reading Assistant: Getting Started Guide for Students

About Reading Assistant

Reading Assistant is like reading with your teacher or with anyone else. Sometimes (like when you're reading for a test) Reading Assistant will listen to you read and will not interrupt your reading. Other times, Reading Assistant will talk with you to help you with reading and understanding the words. Reading Assistant may also ask you questions about the story you read.

Are you excited to get started? Reading Assistant is ready for you! Let's start with these few steps to get going.

Logging In

  1. Log in using Clever, Classlink, or your district-specific URL.

 

  1. Make Sure the Microphone Works

If logging into Reading Assistant for the first time, you will get Reading Assistant’s ready Module. Reading Assistant may ask you to allow the microphone.

Then Reading Assistant will ask you to help wake up her dog Spot to check your microphone and volume.

Reading a Practice Story
 

If this is your first time using Reading Assistant on a device, Reading Assistant may take several minutes to load. After Reading Assistant has loaded, you will:

  1. Click/Tap Let’s do it

  1. Choose What to Do

  2. Click/Tap Read a story to read a Practice story.

  3. If reading a Practice story for the first time, Reading Assistant will begin the story after clicking/tapping Read a story.

  1. If not reading a Practice story for the first time, Reading Assistant will give you choices for which story you would like to read

  2. Click/Tap the story of your choice

  1. Saving What You Read

After you are done reading with Reading Assistant, wait for a moment or two before closing your computer screen because Reading Assistant needs just a little bit of time to save your reading with her. You will see the following message reminding you to wait just a little bit while she finishes saving your reading.

Reading Assistant will also show you how many words you read correctly as well as the percent of accuracy at the end of each story.

Taking a Test (Assessment)

Sometimes, your teacher may want you to read to Reading Assistant to take a test (or assessment). During this time, Reading Assistant will listen to you read, but Reading Assistant will not help you with your reading.

If this is the first time Reading Assistant has been used on the device, Reading Assistant may take several minutes to load.

  1. Reading Assistant will ask you to wake up Spot to make sure that your microphone is working. 

  2. Reading Assistant will explain the directions for taking the test/assessment and/or reading the story. She will encourage you to do your best! She will also remind you to speak clearly into your microphone, to sound out unknown words, and to skip words, if needed

  3. Reading Assistant will count down by saying Ready, Set, Start!

  4. Then, you will do your best while reading what Reading Assistant shows on your computer

When reading a story, boxes will show on the bottom of the screen to let you know how many story pages have been completed

Keep reading until you are either finished with the whole story or until Reading Assistant let's you know that you do not need to read anymore


 

When you have finished reading, Reading Assistant will say, 'Thank you,' and you will see a message on the screen saying, “Great Work!” The message is for all the great work you did.
